COVID-19 Vaccines

Updated: February 18, 2021

Please check back to this page regularly as  it will be updated as more information is made available.

Vaccinations by Site

The following sites have now been offered both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine: Barrhead, Millwoods Care Centre, Eden House, Kensington Village Long Term Care, Kensington Village DSL, Vanguard Care Centre,Vanguard 4th floor.

The following sites are scheduled for their first doses:

Heritage Condos - February 25

Southside Manor - February 26

We have confirmed that Public Health will not be offering the vaccine to independent residents in Shepherd’s Meadows bungalows at this time. Albertans over the age of 75 have been identified as a priority group. Please continue to monitor  Alberta Heath’s vaccine website at Alberta Health Vaccine Distribution Information.

Although we have already immunized 900+ staff and residents, with the alarming rate of community spread we remind everyone to remain vigilant about adhering to the updated public health guidelines to prevent further spread. This includes using technology to visit with your loved one as much as possible.

Will Shepherd’s Care Vaccinate new residents to Long Term Care and Designated Supportive Living?

This depends on vaccine supply and if the new resident has already received their first dose elsewhere. Shepherd’s Care works closely with our partners at Public Health to ensure all care residents have the opportunity for vaccination.

How is informed consent obtained?

Shepherd’s Care respects the autonomy and choice of the individual. All residents who are their own decision makers are able to provide informed consent. If they are not their own decision maker, the legal decision maker on file is able to provide informed consent. Further, we afford all individuals the opportunity to refuse vaccination. The AHS consent form (applicable to long term care and supportive living only) can be downloaded here.

Which  vaccine will be administered?

To date, the majority of Shepherd’s Care staff and residents have received two doses of the Moderna vaccine, with some staff and residents receiving two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. Both vaccines have the same delivery mechanism (mRNA) and both are approved by Health Canada. The choice of which to administer is up to Public Health and is dependent upon supply and availability.

Once my loved one is fully vaccinated, will visitation restrictions be relaxed?

At this point, there has been no change in the orders from the Chief Medical Officer of Health regarding visitation.

How do you ensure a resident does not accidentally receive two different vaccines?

In early February, AHS implemented new protocols for ensuring residents transferred from one facility to another also transfer vaccination information. Shepherd’s Care Foundation has also implemented additional protocols, which include requiring vaccination information on the admission information and ensuring Netcare records are accessed.

Will Shepherd’s Care staff be vaccinated?

Yes, the vaccine available to front-line health care workers  as they are identified as a priority population. We have established staff vaccination processes. As an employer, we cannot mandate our staff be vaccinated; however, we will be doing everything we can to encourage our staff to be vaccinated and as health care professionals it is our expectation they will receive the vaccine to protect themselves and our residents.

Will staff or residents who previously had COVID-19 receive the vaccine?

Yes, we have confirmed AHS will permit vaccination of staff and residents that previously had COVID-19.

Will volunteers be required to show proof of vaccination before being permitted to volunteer?

At this point, we do not know. It is not clear how quickly vaccines will be made available to the general population. Volunteer services are always cancelled during an outbreak.
